The University House System says:

These residence halls are the two oldest on campus, each with four floors, no elevator. Both houses are co-ed; Snell has one women-only floor and Hitchcock has single sex sections for both men and women. Both are four-class houses, with about 20 first-year spaces in Snell and about 45 in Hitchcock.

Built in the neo-Gothic style, rooms in both houses have hardwood moldings and trim, high ceilings and carpeting. Hitchcock features a large reading room with a baby grand piano and functional fireplace. Snell has its own television lounge and oak-paneled tearoom. These two buildings share a common front desk and basement in which there are a recreation room, computer lab, and a community kitchen for each hall. A modest kitchen fee is charged to all residents.
