Why I Love Broadview

Top Ten Reasons to Choose Broadview

10. History: The school housing office describes Broadview as an early twentieth-century hotel converted into a dorm. This is true. Dorm lore also asserts that the Broadview was in truth a "gentlemen's hotel", i.e. a brothel.

9. Variety of residents: A little over a third of Broadviewites are first years, and there are second, third, and even fourth years living here.

"You can get to know the upperclassmen in Broadview pretty well - they're good for giving perspective on whatever you want to talk about." - Liz Selbst '08, Wick House

8. Big rooms: According to the housing department, our rooms range from 8.5' X 14.5' to 14.5' X 16'. In terms of square footage, these are the biggest singles available to freshmen (Shoreland also has very large rooms, but most freshmen are in doubles or triples); our doubles are certainly not small either. Interestingly, an 8.5' X 14.5' single is bigger than a double in either Pierce or Max P.

"Many rooms are huge - I can freely exercise in mine." - Sofya Leonova '08, Talbot House

7. Great community spaces: Broadview has a community kitchen, library, lobby, study room, and ballroom, all of which are actually well used.

6. Ok, so I couldn't come up with something to fill in this spot. But in the words of Dan Montgomery '08, Palmer House: "Broadview f**king rocks."

5. Staff: From the front desk to maintenance, RAs and RHs, our staff is incredible. Plus, the dorm is small enough that the staff basically knows everyone. So if you forget your ID the front desk people may scold you, but really, they recognize you.

"My RHs are awesome...every night during finals week they host a 15 minute dance party for people to burn off stress." - Liz Selbst '08, Wick House

4. Community: The Broadview is small and somewhat secluded, creating close house and dorm communities. There are frequent activities within the hall.

"The fact that there are relatively few people in a house in Broadview (about sixty) - unlike in Max, for example, where I'll bet you can go a whole year without having any clue who half the people are - makes it pretty comfortable." - Thalia Kapica '07, Palmer House

3. Private bathrooms: Really no explanation necessary here.

"It's kind of nice to know the bathroom is as clean as you make [it], not how dirty other people make [it]." - Angela Stathos '07, Palmer House

2. Location, location, location: This should probably be about three different points on the top ten list, but the Broadview's location means great access to downtown, loads of nearby shops and restaurants, lots of exercise (no freshman 15!), and a sense of "coming home" at night, to get off campus and relax.

1. SINGLES: For many people, their own personal space is one of the best things about Broadview.

"Single rooms are great because you choose when you want privacy, and when you want to be social. If you want to see people, just go out into the lounge. Some people practically live in the lounge, and just go to their rooms to sleep. Thus you don't have to fight with people about conflicting sleeping schedules or tastes in music." - Sofya Leonova '08, Talbot House

"You don't have to fight over who gets to take a shower when or when you turn off the lights." - Hivan Herrejon '08, Palmer House

And for anyone who doesn't care/doesn't want a single...

"I love my roommate." - Allison Tung '08, Palmer House (ok, this is my roommate, but she did legitimately say I could quote her on this!)
